Accelerating the transition to a circular economy

Capitalising on the interest created by the launch of the revised Circular Economy Package, the event aims to support the governmental transformation towards systemic, circular economy strategies which will stimulate innovation and promising, new, employment opportunities.

The event will show how business models, technologies and capabilities influence the shift. High-level representatives from government, businesses and associations will debate how EU-level policy becomes local policy, which then interacts with private interests.

This event is jointly organised by the European Commission's DG Research and Innovation and the European Centre for Government Transformation (ECGT) and will take place in Brussels (Belgium) on 25 January 2016, from 9:30 to 14:00.

eafip workshop for public procurers in the water sector

Leeuwarden, Netherlands

The European Commission invites public procurers in the water sector such as ministries, regional and local authorities, and public utility companies to a free eafip workshop. The workshop will take place in Leeuwarden (the Netherlands) on 9 February and aims to highlight the penefits of innovation procurement of ICT solutions through pre-commercial procurement (PCP) and public procurement of innovation (PPI) in Europe.

The workshop will feature a presentation and discussion on EU funding opportunities for PCP and PPI in the framework of Horizon 2020, case studies and lessons learned, and the eafip Toolkit, which supports public procurers in preparing procurement of innovation.

Participants will have a unique chance to openly discuss unmet procurement needs, innovation concepts, project ideas, and much more. All procurers will have an opportunity to briefly present their ideas, plans, and projects in the parallel sessions. Participants are encouraged to begin thinking of concrete examples that they would like to implement.

INNOCAT Italian Dissemination Event

The EU-funded INNOCAT project is holding a national dissemination event in Turin (Italy) on 18 February 2016. The free event will present the project's results and new scenarios for PPI in the catering sector, with reference to the circular economy.

The event will kick off with the official launch of guidelines by the City of Turin for a low-carbon catering service, as well as the presentation of proven approaches and best practices for sustainable catering procurement in Europe. Finally, a roundtable will examine the trends and challenges in the EU for the circular economy and circular procurement.

The event will conclude with a networking lunch and translation in English and Italian will be available. The event is free to attend.

GPP 2020 webinar on low-carbon street lighting

The next GPP 2020 webinar will take place from 11:00-12:30 CET on 23 February, and will focus on low-carbon street lighting solutions. The webinar will inform participants of the impacts due to light pollution, discuss steps to take in pre-procurement, and present experiences of drafting GPP or low-carbon criteria.

GPP 2020 partner UNDP Croatia will present details about the street lighting tender done by Zupa Dubrovacka and Sabine Frank and colleagues will present work done at the German Wasserkuppe. Andrej Mohar from Dark - Sky Slovenia will further introduce to the related concept of light pollution.

EURECA in Torino

This free event on 29 February in Turin (Italy) will present the EURECA project. EURECA aims to provide tailored solutions to help identify the cost saving opportunities while signposting the environmental impact of procurement choices.

The event will introduce the EURECA project, the background and the tools the project is developing for the public procurement sector. The European Code of Conduct for energy efficient datacentres will also be presented. The project is also interested in hearing how the public sector procures datacenter services and products in Italy could benefit from EURECA and the EURECA tool.

Circular Europe Network on Sustainable Food Systems

The Circular Europe Network is holding a meeting in Seville (Spain) on 15 March in conjunction with the 'Now the Circular Economy' conference on 16 and 17 March. The meeting is only open to ACR+ members and affiliated organisations.

The meeting will focus on public strategies about food and circular economy. It will present an opportunity to discuss how the various national and regional platforms on circular economy can cooperate. A workshop enabling the participants to co-construct guidelines on sustainable food strategies within a circular economy perspective will be included.

The objective of the event is to help cities and regions plan efficient strategies covering the various chains of the food loop: production; transformation, distribution; and consumption.

PPI4Waste Meet the Market Event

Plastics in Belgium

This free event is organised in the framework of the PPI4Waste project and aims to give the opportunity of a dialogue between Belgian public procurers and suppliers in the field of plastic waste management. The objective is to improve the market knowledge of contracting authorities and suppliers' understanding of public needs.

The event is in response to the European Commission's revised waste proposals from December 2015. They include increased recycling targets for packaging materials, including plastic packaging waste, which will reinforce the targets on municipal waste and improve the management of packaging waste in the commercial and industrial sectors.

At the event, participants will hear from the European Commission on the impact of the new EU package on circular economy on plastics, as well as participate in parallel workshops on the impact of innovation procurement on the collection and recycling of plastics under different conditions. The event will conclude with a feedback session and a networking drink. Attendance is free but registration is required, as places are limited.

9th Produrable Conference

30 - 31 March 2016

The ninth edition of Produrable will take place on 30 and 31 March in Paris (France). With the patronage of the French government's Ministry for the Environment, Sustainable Development, and Energy, the conference is France's flagship annual event on corporate social responsibility.

The conference has seven cross-cutting themes - strategy and governance, circular economy, economic transition, responsible finance, social innovation, responsible purchasing, and health. These themes will be explored through plenary sessions, round table discussions, workshops, and an exhibition with 80 presenters.

Attendees can benefit from sharing information and experiences and networking, and thereby develop their businesses and affirm their commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Low-Carbon Procurement in Practice

The EU-funded GPP 2020 project will hold its final conference on 19 April 2016 in Brussels (Belgium). Through the new tenders implemented by the project's purchasing partners, the project has saved 250,000 tonnes of of carbon dioxide. Procurers from European local authorities are encouraged to attend and learn from the project's experiences.

The free event will look back on the project's activities over the past three years and reflect on the capacity for low-carbon public procurement to make a dramatic reduction on Europe's carbon emissions. GPP2020 partners will present their ideas and achievements in procuring supplies, services, and contracting.

Participants will be able to learn from these experiences through a market format. The first round of the market will be split into different aspects of low-carbon public procurement, such as calculating energy savings and tender models for replication. The second round will look at GPP 2020 experiences in Austria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain.

Circular Procurement: the next step

20 - 22 April 2016
Amsterdam, Netherlands

From 20-22 April 2016 the Dutch Government, Rijkswaterstaat, will host an international congress named 'Circular Procurement: the next step' in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). The congress will bring together policy makers and practitioners from all levels within the public sector with suppliers and representatives from around the world. Participation in the event is free.

The congress is organised in collaboration with the UNEP Programme on Sustainable Public Procurement and ICLEI, as well as the EU projects REBUS, SPP Regions, GPP2020 and the Dutch Green Deal Circular Procurement. It aims to promote international cooperation through concrete action, by demonstrating the powerful link between sustainable procurement and the path towards a more circular economy.

The event will include workshops workshops on circular indicators, monitoring, and business models; group discussions on circular procurement and next steps for implementation; and networking opportunities including a dinner and tour of Amsterdam's canals.
