German procurers show desire to purchase sustainably at Hannover conference

German buyers at CeBIT, an annual information technology (IT) conference in Hannover (Germany), displayed great interest in sustainable purchasing according to TCO Development, an organisation providing sustainable certification. The interest is attributed to a desire for the IT industry to be more involved in sustainability issues, particularly socially responsible manufacturing.

Germany is one of the largest actors in Europe regarding IT procurements, with the public sector alone procuring billions of euro worth of products and services annually. The German Federal Employment Agency, for example, procures IT equipment for almost 200,000 users.

During the Conference, TCO Development spoke to several large German procurers, such as ITDZ Berlin and the State of Bavaria, about sustainable procurement. Together German procurers have a lot of power to influence global sustainability issues regarding IT.
