Public buildings in Brandenburg to only use electricity from renewable sources

From 1 January 2014 the state of Brandenburg (Germany) will be supplying all of its public buildings with electricity generated from 100 percent renewable energy. Prior to this, the state had been using renewable sources to meet 73 percent of its energy needs.

By using electricity solely from renewable sources, the state government will make a saving of roughly 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. This is the equivalent emissions production from electricity generation of approximately 9,900 households. The suppliers will be Stadtwerke Potsdam and Stadtwerke Cottbus.

Public buildings in Brandenburg includes those of all public authorities, universities and other public institutions, comprising over 200 state properties with approximately 1.2 million square metres of floor space.
